Cheyenne River Buffalo Project Earns Recognition

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe's buffalo restoration project, Pte Hca Ka, has been named one of 99 semifinalists in the Innovations in American Government Awards, which recognizes original and effective initiatives at all levels of government.

Innovations in American Government is an awards program of the Institute for Government Innovation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. The program is administered in partnership with the Council for Excellence in Government, and is funded by the Ford Foundation.

Pte Hca Ka combines environmental and ecological restoration, cultural preservation and spiritual revitalization with socio-economic development, helping tribal members restore a centuries-old relationship with buffalo while at the same time achieving self-sufficiency.

Semifinalists were selected from a pool of more than 1,300 applicants and range from local school districts to federal agencies. The recognized programs do everything from encourage recycling to make playgrounds handicap-accessible to help improve crime scene investigations. Applications are evaluated based on originality, effectiveness, value of services to clients and potential for replication elsewhere.

Fifteen finalists will be chosen from the pool of semifinalists in September. The National Selection Committee on Innovations in American Government will then select five winning programs after a full day of presentations Oct. 17 in Washington, D.C. The five winners each will receive $100,000, and the other 10 finalists each will receive $20,000.
