Monarch Photo Essay

First, here are the caterpillar to butterfly photos.

I couldn't believe my good luck. I just happened to be taking photos of the transluscent chrysalis when the butterfly decided that was the moment it would break free! I had my camera on a tripod using a slow shutter speed because of the dark area (a bbq grill) it was hanging from, that is why these shots are blurry.

Then the butterfly, still moist and soft, was carefully taken onto a pretty leaf of the crown flower tree where it started its transformation

In all the photos, the butterfly was hanging down. I just turned these photos for a better view.

Below, see the coiled tongue for sipping.

Finally, the wings open!

I wanted to see how the head looks, since I felt I just couldn't get close enough ... looks better in color

These were taken with a scanning electron microscope
