15th ANNUAL CALIFORNIA INDIAN CONFERENCE
OCTOBER 14-15, 2000
The California Indian Conference is an annual gathering for the exchange of views and
information among academics, American Indians, students, and other community members. Any topic reflecting humanistic,
scientific, social, literary, or historical concern with California Indian people and their heritage is welcome.
Past topics have included literatures, storytelling, poetry, education, basketry, linguistics, anthropology, archeology,
law, repatriation, history, casinos, Hollywood, tribal recognition, song and dance, and social and political issues.
Anyone interested in giving a paper or making a presentation should send an abstract of 150 words to Dr. LaMay
at the address below by September 1, 2000. Abstracts
received after this date will be considered only if space is available on the program. Please be sure to include
an address, e-mail address, and phone number and state if you are available both days. Inquiries are welcome as
well. Selected papers may be considered for later publication in several journals.
Admission to the conference will be $30.00 for all persons attending. Special conference airfare, rental car, hotel

The Office of Student Development and Community Service announces a new opportunity within our campus community
and encourages those with directly related and/or transferable skills to apply. The Native American Resource Center
will provide a central resource for our students, building a community that supports awareness, advocacy and the
development of programs fostering leadership, scholarship, and social responsibility. The new director will join
our congenial, committed team of eight student support service directors working in partnership with students to
meet the goals and objectives of the Student Affairs Division. We offer an excellent benefits package including

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Executive Director for Student Development and Community Services,
the selected candidate will develop, implement, and supervise all Center programs and activities; be responsible
for the formulation and implementation of short and long-term goals and objectives established for the Center;
and administer/staff the Centerís routine activities on a daily basis. The Director will work in close partnership
with other UCSC Resource Center Directors, college staff, academic groups, and student organizations as appropriate.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Program Development: develop/implement a variety of mentoring and issue-specific
support group programs; establish open hours for the Center; develop/implement a variety of orientation activities.
Advising: serve as a advisor, assisting students with personal, academic, and career concerns; assist students
in developing/writing effective funding proposals; provide mediation/conflict resolution; publish a reoccurring
newsletter. Administration: develop annual goals/objectives; responsible for recruiting, selecting and supervising
casual support staff and student employees; responsible for managing budgets; develop and maintain resource library.
Academic Support: support and offer academic programming as appropriate; provide opportunities/resource materials
for faculty and students; provide space for informal/formal study groups and student research clusters. Recruitment
and Retention: develop/update and publish results of a needs-assessment and analysis of issue affecting the retention/matriculation
of students; identify/promote existing retention-enhancing services; develop and/or advocate for the development
of new services as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE (with or without accommodation): experience in working with diverse communities; substantial
experience in project organization and implementation; demonstrated experience in budget management, successful
administrative planning, program development, and creative problem solving skills; experience in supervising professional
and student staff; excellent interpersonal, public relations, team and consensus building, facilitation, and public
speaking skills; excellent counseling and advising skills; excellent writing skills and the ability to prepare
program evaluation, annual reports, and a variety of other publications; familiarity with university-level American
Indian educational issues, community resources, and organization; knowledge of access and equity issues for educationally
disadvantaged groups in California; knowledge sufficient to use computers for electronic mail, basic web site development
and maintenance, word processing, desktop publishing, and data base development. The abilities to: work well in
a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment; maturity and good judgment, especially in confidential, sensitive,
and/or crisis situations; demonstrate sensitivity to cross-cultural, gender, race, and sexual orientation issues
and implementations of programs to meet diverse needs; assess student needs and evelop/implement programs that
address these needs; demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with a broad spectrum of students, student groups,
faculty, administrative staff, and community persons; create an environment that supports working effectively with
diverse groups of people and where difficult, sensitive and confidential situations are handled tactfully and according
to university policy and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Counseling, Education, Student Development, Native American Studies,
or related field; experience working with university, community, regional and national Native American organizations
and programs; familiarity with issues of American Indian retention.

The job duties of the current vacancy are to plan, direct and implement the statewide Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Program and to build capacity for addressing issues surrounding perinatal exposure to alcohol and other
adverse substances of abuse and surrounding alcohol related neuro-developmental (ARND) disorders. The position
will supervise staff assigned to provide technical information to health professionals, program clients and the
public, will research and write grant applications to secure federal funds, prepare budget plans and manage contracts
and grants.
The selection process is an experience and training rating 100%. To qualify and receive a score of 85, you must
have a Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Behavioral Science, Health Care Administration, Human Services,
Social Services Administration or equivalent areas; AND you must have two years of advanced professional or supervisory
experience in directing or administering a health promotion, health education, community health
program or project. You will be eligible for 15 additional points if you hold a Master’s degree in Public Health,
Social Work, Psychology, a medical field or a closely related area. If you meet this requirement, attach a

Workshop for American Indian Museums and Cultural Centers
August 21-25
Deadline- June 28, 2000
Sponsored by the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies and the National Museum of the American Indian.
Workshop goal: To explore the use of historical documents and photographs in museum
exhibitions and to learn about searching for and finding historical materials in research facilities. The targeted
audience is tribal museum/cultural center staff people responsible for production of exhibitions. Workshop participants
will visit the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Archives to hear research professionals
describe historic documents and photograph collections and methods of information retrieval.

Fund of the Four Directions
Executive Director
The Fund of the Four Directions is a national Native American grant-making foundation
established in 1997. Based in New York City, the Fund provides grants and technical assistance to Indigenous-controlled
organizations working to revitalize the lifeways and cultures of Native Americans across the United States. Support
is given to programs that focus on language restoration, renewal of Indigenous communities and intergenerational
collaboration, as well as advocacy and promotion of the cultural and spiritual lifeways of Indigenous peoples.
The Fund provides grants and technical assistance to community groups for capacity building, and encourages collaboration
among them to develop and strengthen programs and services that are consistent with Indigenous ways.
The Executive Director directs and oversees the Fund's administrative and program operations.
Reporting to the Board Chair, the Executive Director will supervise one full-time and one part-time staff. Administrative
duties include fiscal planning and management, and development of the Fund's assets through an endowment campaign
and other fundraising activities. Program responsibilities include providing overall direction to the Fund's giving
program, evaluating and recommending proposals for funding, assisting in monitoring funded projects, and coordinating
the technical assistance, resources and guidance provided to community groups. Working closely with the Board of
Directors, the Executive Director will participate in strategic planning and development of overall organizational
policy, and coordinate Board members’ roles in the Fund's activities outside of New York City. Travel will be required.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in program or project management
- Experience in nonprofit management and community organizing
- Tribal cultural background and Native language proficiency, a plus
- Strong analytical, organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Strong writing and presentation skills
- Commitment to the vision and mission of the Fund of the Four Directions

Opening for Retention Program Coordinator at ACCESS (a TRIO SSS Program).
The position is open until filled.
Under the direction of the ACCESS program director, the Retention Program Coordinator
will oversee, plan and organize the development of the ACCESS
Program (TRIO SSS) activities. These include workshops, tours, scholarship search, career mentorship program, etc.
S/he will conduct workshops, make
classroom and community presentations, an act as a liaison in establishing a calendar of cultural events and activities.
Activities will also include collecting and maintaining data. S/he will work as part of a team in conjunction with
the rest of the ACCESS Program staff. This is a categorical position. Full-time, 11 months
per year. Work schedule includes evening hours and an occasional weekend as needed.
Salary Range 57, $2709-$3222, 1999-2000 Classified Salary Schedule. Initial placement
salary: $2709-$2949
