SLMS
- Antarctic WebQuest
Antarctica. A cold and inhospitable place. A desert covered by ice nearly
two miles thick in some inland areas. Bitter cold winds, with gust over
100 mph, freeze the continent solid. Too cold for most animals to live,
yet along the coast the seas surrounding Antarctica are teaming with
life. Penguins, seals, krill, and killer whales all coexist within this
exotic and alien world.

Hi! Welcome to our web site. The rainforest

The
Pipestone Petroglyphs
Pipestone National Monument, bordering the town of Pipestone in southwestern
Minnesota, preserves and interprets the historic catlinite quarries
which, for hundreds of years, served as the source of a soft red claystone
that Native Americans carved into pipes and other objects. These famous
quarries have often been described in travelers' accounts since 1832,
when they were first known to have been visited by non-Native Americans
(Prescott 1852; Parker 1966).

Voyage to Hawaii
Long before European explorers sailed to
Hawaii the natives of Hawaii were already sailing the high seas. Not
only did they have the knowledge of how to sail and navigate between
the Hawaian islands, but between other islands in the Pacific Ocean
as far away as New Zealand as well. And they could do this without the
aid of compasses, maps, or the ability to write. These native islanders
had a deep understanding of the way the ocean currents and the stars
moved and they used this knowledge to find their way across a vast ocean.
Come explore with us as we learn how they did it.

Walkin' Jim Stoltz
Jim Stoltz, known far and wide as Walkin' Jim,
sings his songs with a definite sense of having been there. Indeed,
he has. It all began innocently enough, walking the Appalachian Trail
from Georgia to Maine. That was in 1974. After a year and a half spent
walking from the Atlantic to the Pacific, folks just naturally started
referring to him as "Walkin' Jim."

Where
Is That?
"The game where your mind is your map."
Choose from seven maps and five levels of difficulty. Level one starts
with multiple choice questions ("Is this France, Russia or Germany?")
Level five means spelling the country or state AND its capital city.
Want to play against a buddy? Hats off to Funbrain for including a two-player
version, where each player can choose his own level of difficulty. And
this marvelous game is Java-free, so it's compatible with older browsers
and WebTV.

Where
In The World?
Start your geography lesson by choosing a region
of the world, and studying the interactive maps which name each country
as your mouse passes over it. When you're ready for the games, each
region has three to choose from: Find Game ("Where is Finland?"),
Quiz Game ("This country is famous for its clocks.") or Word
Game (a hangman-like word guessing game). My favorite click is Quiz
Game; but remember you must choose a region before you'll see the game
choices.

Why
is My Loyalty Questioned?
"Why is My Loyalty Questioned?" has
been asked by people different times during America's history. They're
surprised that others might wonder if they are loyal to the country
that they choose to live in and have always loved and supported. After
the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, Japanese Americans were
discriminated against as they were put into relocation camps simply
because of the ethnic background. Later, they proved their loyalty by
volunteering to defend America, the very country that mistreated them.
